In the first round of a junior tournament there are hardly ever many upsets. This year was no exception – all of the top seeds crushed their opponents, with the exception of Pablo Oriol, who lost a drawish looking ending against Julian McDonald. Perhaps Mr Anand was tired after playing thirty games in a row in the ‘official’ world championship. I have a much fairer proposition for the world championship – the winner of the
knockout tournament flies to Switzerland, where he will play a game of rock-paper-scissors with Mr Karpov.
