Jammo's Chess Puzzle No. 1

Written by Robert Jamieson on 21st Jul, 2009

In this position Black has just played 1…Re8.   This appears to be a blunder as White can play 2.Bxf7 forking the Queen and the Rook.  Should White take the pawn on f7 or does he perhaps have a better move?

White to Play

White to Play

When you are ready to see the answer

Answer:

Black’s move was not a blunder as it contained a threat that he hoped that White would miss.  2.Bxf7?? losses immediately to 2…Qxf3+ 3.gxf3 Bh3+ 4.Kg1 Re1+ 5.Kf2 Bh4#

If you think that your opponent has blundered it pays to double check first, he may be trying to trick you!
