Jammo's Chess Puzzle No.2

Written by Robert Jamieson on 28th Jul, 2009

Here is a position where material is even but White has more aggressively placed pieces whereas Black has a much better pawn structure.  The question is which side would you prefer to play.  White or Black?  It’s White to move.

White to Play. Which side do you prefer?

White to Play. Which side do you prefer?

When you are ready to see the answer…

If you evaluated the position from a positional perspective it doesn’t matter whether you chose White or Black!   Tactics always trump positional play and White has a tactic.  1.Nd6! wins material and the game as White is threatening 2.Ne8 and if 1…exd6 2.cxd6 wins the R.

The moral is that, when assessing a position, first check the tactics and only then move on to your positional evaluation.

    Nd6 exd6
    cxd6 Bf6

Hence really doesn’t help I think. Can you please send the complete solution?
